The Tailgate opens for a fourth season with new farms and new features.

April 30, 2009  - Charlotte, NC The Charlotte Tailgate Farmers Market, commonly known as “The Tailgate,” is open for our fourth season!  We are also proud to announce that we are the recipient of the Charlotte Magazine BOB Award for “

Best Place
to Buy Local” in Charlotte.  We will be present at the BOB Awards ceremony at SouthPark Mall on May 14th.

Our 2009 season will feature a raised bed organic demonstration garden and a series of “how-to” workshops for the urban gardener. Building on the success of last season’s Bravo-sponsored Top Chef Road Show, we also have a calendar of local celebrity chef demonstrations using ingredients from our market vendors and samplings from our on site garden.

The Tailgate is located at

100 West Park Avenue
, where
West Park Avenue
intersects
Camden Road
.  On-street parking is available in abundance on Park Avenue and on
Camden Road
.  Both the

More News About The Tailgate

In the face of food security issues it is more important than ever to know where our food is grown and produced.  The farm goods at The Tailgate are sold by the farmers and artisans that grow and craft what they sell.   Also, with the economic downturn we are seeing a surge of new small farms and urban growers who seek a market home.  That is exciting news for consumers who seek greater variety and supply!  Urban farming is the inevitable future of agriculture in the Piedmont region

You can visit The Tailgate on the Web at http://www.charlottetailgatemarket.com.  The market blog is updated periodically with news, reviews and musings:  http://charlottetailgatemarket.spaces.live.com.

We are grateful to our partners, Gaines Brown Design, Queens Beans, the Common Market, Slow Food Charlotte and Charlotte Center City Partners for their support and assistance in establishing the market, which is certain to become a Charlotte destination for residents and visitors alike.

About the Charlotte Tailgate Farmers Market

The Charlotte Tailgate Farmers Market was started on

Commonwealth Ave.
in Plaza-Midwood with the support of the Common Market to give local growers using organic practices an opportunity to participate in a local food farmers market and build relationships with Charlotte area consumers.  The new location of the Common Market at 1515 S Tryon in SouthEnd offers us yet again a promising partnership.  Our market strives to be a fun, educational, fresh marketplace for savvy urban shoppers and locavores who recognize the value of seasonal produce, other fresh farm goods, and crafts handmade by local artisans.

More News About The Tailgate

In the off-season The Tailgate got academic. Market Manager Lynn Caldwell was engaged as a client for a graduate architecture studio project led by Professor Peter Wong at UNCC. Sixteen potential designs for a future more permanent market location were developed in the course of the project, and could very well help guide the future of The Tailgate. The January 2008 issue of Realtor Reflections magazine featured a story about the project.
